On a hot, sunny Sunday in Pittsburgh, several dozen people in bright orange T-shirts that read “WalMart Pride” marched through the downtown streets behind a WalMart-branded 18-wheeler. A handful of rainbow flags waved from the truck’s windows.
Los Angeles has been the host to gay pride parades since 1970, but this year, organizers canceled their annual parade. Organizers are instead marching down Hollywood Boulevard in what they’re calling the #ResistMarch.
For the first time in eight years, it looks like the White House won’t mark LGBTQ Pride Month with any events or a proclamation recognizing the month-long celebration.
It’s hard to imagine a world without the now iconic six-colored stripes of Gilbert Baker’s rainbow flag, which he made in 1978 at the request of the late San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk to be launched at that year’s Gay Pride Parade as a uniting symbol. (Baker’s original flag had eight colors.)
